GUIDELINES FOR DISPOSAL OF DUPLICATE JOURNAL ISSUES
In 2004, the University of Virginia Libraries began to participate in East Coast Exchange, a service of Absolute Backorder, whereby we send them duplicate issues of journals and in return benefit from a deep discount on replacement issues when they are immediately available from them.
Please observe the following guidelines when preparing your duplicate issues:
- No weeklies, brochures, newsletters, state periodicals,
or duplicate issues. Absolute does not want all of
our issues of Newsweek and the like.
- Please do not accept gifts of journals from neighbors
or others for sending to Absolute. We have a huge
stockpile of credits with Absolute and do not need
additional journal issues to send to them beyond what
we have in the libraries. There is a cost to us in
staff time and postage for maintaining this program
and we could easily become overwhelmed if we acted
as a processing center for recycling.
- When preparing your duplicates for sending to Acquisitions,
please count the number of items, put them in a 10" x 17" cardboard
box, and write the number on the box. Send your duplicates
to Serials Unit, Acquisitions Department, Alderman
Library.
GUIDELINES FOR REPLACEMENT OF LOST JOURNAL ISSUES may be found at:
http://www.lib.virginia.edu/acquisitions/order_procedures/journalissuereplacement.html.
When identifying a lost journal issue, you may
check Absolute's inventory at http://www.absolute-inc.com/_/inventory/.
We receive the discount only on those titles in stock
at Absolute. Send your replacement requests to lib-sub@virginia.edu.
