Circulation Policy

Users may contact the circulation desk to renew materials, ask about availability of items or inquire about library policies or notices in person, by mail, by telephone (434) 924-3017 or by e-mailing lib-circ@virginia.edu

Check your e-mail often. The library now sends recall, hold, overdue and billing notices to UVA faculty, students and staff by e-mail.

Renewals

Materials may be renewed through Virgo User Services, in person, by calling (434) 924-3017 or by e-mailing lib-circ@virginia.edu
Recalled items, periodicals and some other special materials may not be renewed. Interlibrary Loan materials should be be renewed through that office. Call (434) 924-3875

Recalls

Users who have a need for material currently checked out can place a recall on the charged item. Recalled items must be returned within 8 days of the recall notice. Recalled items accrue recall overdue fines of $1.00/day. Once the material is returned, the requesting user will be notified and the item will be held at the specified Circulation Desk for 8 days after which it will be re-shelved or circulated to the next waiting user.

Return of Materials

Books charged from any UVA library may be returned to any UVA library. Alderman Library has two outdoor book returns. One is located inside the first set of doors at the main entrance. The other is in the wall near the rear service entrance and is acce ssible from momentary parking in the delivery circle.

Suspension of Borrowing Privileges

When materials become long overdue the user is billed for replacement. If materials are not returned or paid for within 30 days of billing, library borrowing privileges are suspended and the bill is referred to the University Bursar for collection. Over due fines that are unpaid after 30 days are also referred to the Bursar for collection and library privileges are suspended at that time. Accounts that have not been referred to the Bursar may be cleared at the Library by returning the items and paying t he fines. If the account has been referred to the Bursar's Office payment must be made there. Prompt response to bills from the Library will avoid referral to the Bursar. When accounts are referred to the Bursar, registration and receipt of transcript s are blocked.

Carrels

Study carrels are available in Alderman Library for master and doctoral candidates who are writing their thesis or dissertation. Humanities and Social Science departments provide the library with a list of eligible students each fall and the Library make s assignments at that time. Because space is limited, each carrel must be shared by 2 students. Materials kept in a carrel must be charged out at the Circulation Desk and are subject to recall.

Confidentiality

User records and circulation records are private information protected by state and federal law. Access to a user's record is available only to that user.

Information For People With Disabilities

Members of the University Library staff are committed to ensuring that anyone with a disability can fully benefit from Library resources and services. The staff at all library service desks will respond with assistance in using the catalog and paging of m aterials. If you have any questions or concerns about physical access, special equipment or services, contact Barbara Jackson, Coordinator of Library Services for People with Disabilities, 924-6604, baj@virginia.edu

Finding Materials in the Stacks

Location guides, showing location of call numbers are posted at computer workstations and library elevators. Copies of the stacks guide are available in the main lobby. Bound periodicals, like books, are shelved according to call number. If an item is checked out, it can be recalled through VIRGO.

If the catalog record indicates that a title is available for circulation, but you do not find it on the shelf, it may be on its way from Circulation back to the stacks. Look in the re-shelving area in the old section of the fourth floor stacks. If the item cannot be located, place a SEARCH request. Forms are available at the Circulation Service desk.
