Phil and Suzanne,

Here is some text for the e-SALNAQ. Comments, queries, changes? Let me know.

South Asia Library News and Queries (SALNAQ)

I recommend that we move away from lengthy journal-type articles to a strictly news, queries, and current events type newsletter after the manner of its name.

Purpose:
1. To be the official reporting format for minutes of CONSALD, SAMP and other established or ad hoc committees
2. To keep those interested in South Asia bibliographic information current with new bibliographic tools and information resources

SALNAQ will concentrate on short descriptions of new bibliographic tools in all formats, including short reviews of new bibliographies, indexes, dictionaries, encyclopedias. More extensive reviews will cover electronic databases which many libraries now regularly have on their local systems. (E.g. lists such as Monicas Uncover list is very useful and short descriptions of other commonly held databases such as Academic Index, ISI, ABI/Inform, Francis, etc. should be described for its South Asia content.)

Information on projects, either proposed, in process or completed can be kept here. Also, addresses of librarians and institutions:e.g. http://www.lib.virginia.edu/area-studies/SouthAsia/Lib/clist.html; http://www.lib.virginia.edu/area-studies/SouthAsia/Lib/sapages.html

The e-SALNAQ could also have a queries page which would allow individuals to post queries to the editors who then can edit the question and submit it to the group as well.

SALNAQ should not also overlap too much with other Web based South Asia resource lists which we all are making to one degree or another. Although new developments on individual web sites could then be included in the SALNAQ newsletter.

All will be encouraged to submit short entries for the journal.

Periodicity:
What should be the periodicity of SALNAQ? Quarterly or semi-annually. If we go to a Web-based format, it will be easier to maintain and will cut down on the number of printed copies that will have to be made. I suggest at least a half-yearly update coinciding with either the AAS meeting or the Wisconsin.

Format:
Web E-Journal format Paper copy will bemade from Web Page for mailing to those without internet access.
