What's in the Journal American Rhododendron Society

Sonja Nelson, Editor

A Summary:

The Fall 1999 issue of the Journal American Rhododendron Society features the following articles:

The quarterly Journal American Rhododendron Society is a benefit of membership in the American Rhododendron Society.

[Sonja Nelson, Editor of the "Journal American Rhododendron Society," has given general guidelines for the convenience of those who wish to submit articles for Journal American Rhododendron Society. These Guidelines are published in a past issue of "Rhododendron and Azalea News" on the Internet.   There are separate guidelines for scientific research articles. If you wish to submit to that publication, send the material for consideration to

Making Paths & Walkways by Paige Gilchrist Blomgren. Vicki Tanner in her column, 'Rhododendron Reader Review,' in Tualatin Valley Chapter's The Rhody Runner says to make a path to the nearest bookstore and pick up a copy to help select materials based on climate considerations, difficulties in construction and the advantages and disadvantages of certain materials. Learn how to calculate materials; how to price materials; where to purchase materials; what effect you'll achieve. According to the author, "….paths merge naturally with their surroundings." The path that leads you to a special rhododendron or focal point can be the charm of any garden. Ms. Tanner suggests gathering up this full color book filled with historical facts about famous paths and begin creating a path that "….can take travelers on journeys filled with expectation."

Princeton Chapter's Jay Murray (ARS Plant Registrar) has a column in the Princeton Chapter Newsletter called "FAQ" in which she answers frequently asked questions about rhododendrons. The October 1999 newsletter question was:
? FAQ: How can I identify the edition of my RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) Colour Chart? Where can I purchase the RHS Color Chart?

Jay Murray answers:
The three editions of the Colour Chart are packaged differently. The 1966 edition is in a dark green, heavy cardboard box with a lift-off top; 1986 is in a silvery gray, plastic box with a flip-up top; 1995 is in a dark green, plastic box with a flip-up top.

The RHS Colour Chart is available from:

RHS Enterprises Ltd
RHS Gardens

 Searching the Alderman Library Sites:

Go to the Alderman Library site at http://www.lib.virginia.edu/science/guides/s-rhodo.htm. In the first paragraph there is a link to the site wide search engine. Click on that to bring up the search page. Proceed as in other searches by typing word(s) to find what you want. This search information was provided by Publisher Dr. Herbert Spady.

Sandra McDonald, Archives Committee Chairman, reports the Alderman Library is trying to make this Website as comprehensive as possible by providing links to rhododendron information. The Alderman Library is the American Rhododendron Society's repository for all information, publications and anything pertinent to the Society and its members. Keep your letters and papers about rhododendrons.

[Editor: Please keep this in mind. YOUR records and letters concerning rhododendrons and rhododendron people may be important historical information to the world of rhododendrons.]

Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Camellias, by John D. Dunmire, Jim McCausland and the Editors at Sunset. Sunset Books, Menlo Park, California. January 1999. Mr. McCausland is a member of Seattle Chapter. The table of contents includes:

  1. Introducing Azaleas
  2. Introducing Rhododendrons
  3. Introducing Camellias
  4. Secrets of Success
  5. Index

There are many color photos. It is a good beginner's book but of interest to all.

Is the Linnaean Nomenclature Doomed?

Tennessee Valley Chapter's Newsletter Editor, Tom Hughes, has a sixth sense in finding interesting information. The following comments and information were seen in the November 1999 copy of the newsletter he edits.

"Some taxonomists, addressing the recent International Botanical Congress in Saint Louis, have proposed changing the way every living thing gets named. Linné's kingdoms, phyla and orders would be dropped in favor of a system based on phylogeny. Three papers stirred discussion:

Cantino, P.D., et al. 1999. Phylogenic nomenclature. XVI International Botanical Congress. Aug. 1-7. St. Louis.
de Queiroz, K. 1999. Phylogenetic nomenclature and taxonomic stability. XVI International Botanical Congress. Aug. 1-7. St. Louis.
Kron, K. 1999. The need for a phylogenetic nomenclature. XVI International Botanical Congress. Aug. 17. St. Louis.

(Note that Kathy Kron is one of the 'evolutionary revolutionaries'.) The proposal, of course, is not brand new. I understand that it was discussed by Hennig in 1966:

Hennig, W. 1966. Phylogenetic systematics. University of Illinois Press: Urbana, Ill.

[Note: I wasn't there and haven't read the papers. Maybe more on this after I read the papers. --Tom Hughes]"

Mr. Hughes has given permission to use materials from the Tennessee Valley Newsletters.

Vireya Rhododendrons:

"Mitch" Mitchell, president of Hawaii Chapter, wrote in Viva Vireyas, the chapter newsletter, "Some vireya rhododendron lovers say that they don't join the ARS because the Journal American Rhododendron Society doesn't include much about vireya rhododendrons. Here's how to prove them wrong. Get a copy of Vireya Rhododendrons, an Anthology of Articles from the Journal of the American Rhododendron Society 1954-1998 by E. White and Lucie Sorenson Smith, Bovees Nursery in Portland, Oregon. The book contains over one hundred articles authored by well-known vireya enthusiasts. There is not much about the vireya culture that is not included. It's just like eating peanuts. Once you start reading the book, you can't put it down.  Vireya Rhododendrons, an Anthology of Articles from the Journal of the American Rhododendron Society 1954-1998 is only available directly from the Smiths. Email them for information. Bovees@teleport.com

Tropical Rhodies for the Northwest

Vireya rhododendrons are the subject of Sunset Magazine's November 1999 article, "Tropical Rhodies for the Northwest," pp. 62-68. It is written by Jim McCausland, Seattle Chapter member and Sunset's Northwest Bureau in Seattle. Beautiful photographs by Norman Plate and good basic information about how to grow and what is available bring more attention to this group of rhododendrons.

Rhododendrons, Classic Garden Plants by John Street with photographs by Vincent Page.

Vicki Tanner wrote in the Oct 99 Taulatin Valley Chapter newsletter:
"Like the plant hunters gathering precious plants, John Street has gathered seeds of information for his readers. Street begins with a brief history of the rhododendron's introduction in 1656 and subsequent species collectors up to the Chelsea Flower Show of 1948. Precise pen and ink illustrations of cultivation techniques accompany information on diseases, pests and disorders. Splendid photographs of 110 species and hybrids will captivate the reader.
"Beginners will enjoy the propagation tips and the lists of species rhododendrons with their origins and descriptions. Street lists International Societies and gardens, including Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden in Portland, Greer Gardens Nursery and Hendricks Park in Eugene, The Rhododendron Botanical Garden in Federal Way, Washington and numerous other Washington sites.
"A recommended varieties list is especially helpful for beginners because he categorizes them by size, color, species and/or hybrids.

"Example:
Good white species R. auriculatum
Good white hybrid Avalanche

"Plant this book in your library and enjoy it again and again."

The television show, "Gardening in America," was awarded the Garden Writers of Amerca's Quill and Trowel Award recently. A good friend of rhododendrons, Ed Hume who is the writer and participant, often brings attention to our favorite plants whenever he can. He and his staff really enjoy the gardening field and the people associated with gardening. The program is the oldest continuous-running television show in America. Produced in the Seattle area, it is also seen throughout the Pacific Northwest but can be found on independent stations in Chicago, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, New York and Florida.

The International Plant Propagators' Society Combined Proceedings, Volume 48, 1998 has the following papers from the Regional Annual Meetings that may be of interest to our readers.

Book about Pests: Herb Spady found an interesting book in browsing through a bookstore in Eureka, California in free time during the Western Regional Rhododendron Conference, "Pests of the Garden and Small Farm" by Mary Louise Flint from University of California Press.

Japanese Style Gardens of the Pacific West Coast by Kendall H. Brown. 1999. Color photos by Melba Levick. 176 pp. From Rizzoli International Publications, New York. Documents evolution styles and the gardens that best exemplify them. Twenty gardens shown. Information on visiting the gardens is included in a directory.

Tree Pruning by Alex Shigo is published by Shigo and Trees Associates of Durham, NH. It is recommended by Mary Palmer who is editor of the North Island Rhododendron Society Newsletter. Mary says, "It has marvelous photos of the right and wrong way to prune trees. Slices of trunks and branches have been photographed to show how mistakes by the pruner turn into disasters for the tree. This is a good way to learn the correct way to prune trees."

The New Royal Horticultural Society Dictionary of Gardening, a 1992 hardcover publication, is now available in paperback from Grove's Dictionaries, Inc. in New York at 1-800-221-2123. There are over 180 general essays and 4,000 drawings from 250 contributors from around the world. C. D. Brickell, former Director-General of the Royal Horticultural Society says, "It is the most complete source of information for every gardener."

For those who find the above four-volume set unwieldy (and expensive), the RHS has condensed that work into a single hardcover volume, The Royal Horticultural Society Shorter Dictionary of Gardening by Michael Pollock and Mark Griffiths, Macmillan UK, London, 1999. With 836 pages, it won't be carried around the garden, but it will serve as a good one-volume gardening dictionary in your library. Christina Scott, assistant editor of American Gardener, says in her review from a recent issue of that publication that there will seldom be frustrations from not finding a word in this book. It has a wide range of topics with more than 1,900 genera described. There is information on nomenclature, culture and common species. The illustrations of plant forms in the appendix include a common name index and a useful synonym index.

Salley and Greer CD-ROM Update: Homer Salley has been producing a CD-ROM for the Salley and Greer book, Rhododendron Hybrids. He writes, "The CD-ROM on rhododendron hybrids with over 1500 color illustrations is on schedule and due to be available at the next Annual Meeting in the East (ARS Annual Convention hosted by the Massachusetts Chapter, May 2000). No more entries to be made at this late date. There will be around 1500 color images in this, the 3rd edition of Rhododendron Hybrids. It will run in ADOBE ACROBAT that can be downloaded from the Net. It runs on PCs in windows or on MACs."

Ted and Mary Greig Biography: Judy Walker, a landscape architect and one of the founding members of the North Island Rhododendron Society, is collecting information, photos and anecdotes about the Greigs, their plants and gardens, people to contact, books and journals. Her goal is to honour the Greigs lives by writing a biography. Ms. Walker had been Mary Greig's friend and gardener for the last eight years of her life. She remembers delightful hours on the porch facing the sea with their dogs at their feet, while they talked of life in general and plants in particular. The Greigs were connected to many people on the West Coast. Countless valuable rhododendron species were introduced in the United States through their perseverance, energy and knowledge. If you have any information to share, contact Ms. Judy Walker.

Information seen in the North Island Rhododendron Society Newsletter, November 1999, Mary Palmer, Editor.
