Cataloging Procedures Manual
Appendix 18: Mixed Media
Contents:
INTRODUCTION
This chapter documents procedures for cataloging mixed media materials at the University of Virginia Libraries. Mixed media materials are defined as any combination of print (monographs or serials), audiocassettes, videocassettes, laser discs, computer files (in any form), microforms, maps, etc.
The library policy is for mixed media materials to be mainstreamed, i.e. housed in the library for which they were ordered. Within libraries, the pieces might, in fact, be separated either for the convenience of the users (patrons and staff), or for security reasons.
In general, the cataloger uses the format of the principal piece of a mixed media title to decide how the title is cataloged and classified. Accompanying material may be added to the 300 field (|e) or may be described in a 500 field of the bibliographic record of the principal piece. Create 006 field for copy and original cataloging. Supply codes for the appropriate accompanying material (See Bibliographic Formats and Standards, 2nd ed., FF:2-78). Materials that were cataloged prior to the implementation of this appendix will not be recataloged/reclassed unless a conflict or problem arises.
This chapter is divided into two sections: A. Monographs and B. Serials.
