Appendix 2: URLs in Catalog Records
URLs in monographic records:
A. Linking of full-text materials:
- The record should contain a 530 (other formats available field) indicating
that the title is also available online.
- The second indicator of the 856 tag should be 1 (for version of resource)
- A call should be made
o Call number: automatically supplied (xx number)
o Class scheme: WEB
o Library: UVA-LIB
o Item ID: automatically supplied
o Type: INTERNET
o Home location: INTERNET
o Item cat1: ADD
o Current location: INTERNET
o Circulate: not checked (not a separate piece, cannot circulate)
B. Linking of material other than full-text:
- When URLs link to material other than full-text (such as table of contents,
abstracts, reviews), the 856 should contain subfield |3 giving the nature of the
material (such as table of contents).
The second indicator is 1 (electronic version) when the material is part of the book such as table of contents, and 2 (related resource) when it is not part of the book such as a review or publisher description. Do not be overly concerned with the tagging of the second indicator since interpretations vary.Examples:

generally do not have 530 notes. Do not add 530 notes.
- Calls should not be made for these materials.
C. URLs are not retained:
- URLs are not kept when they link to advertising, order forms, etc. (However, publishers descriptions appear to be on many DLC records and are being kept.)
