Appendix 30: Bibliographic Tools for Cataloing

The following comprise a partial list of tools useful for cataloging. When using any tool, the cataloger should be aware of the scope, intent and accuracy of the resource. In determining the aggressiveness with which to consult these tools, the cataloger should keep in mind the goals of the department and make judgements as to the best use of a cataloger's time in relation to the patron's access to library materials.

  1. GENERAL CATALOGING

    1. Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed. rev. The national standard for descriptive cataloging and choice and form of entries. The Library of Congress has made specific interpretations of these rules which are followed by this library. These are published in the Library of Congress Cataloging Service Bulletin and are indexed in each issue.

    2. SIRSI Manuals

      Unicorn Collection Management System Cataloging Manual. The SIRSI system manual for the cataloging module.

    3. OCLC Manuals

      1. Bibliographic Formats and Standards, 2nd ed. OCLC database manual on the proper way to transcribe cataloging information for input into the OCLC database and on the requirements for the input of cataloging records to the OCLC database. The prescribed manual for determining fields, tags and delimiters. Includes I and K level standards.

      2. Concise Input Standards, 3rd ed. OCLC manual providing requirements for the input of cataloging records to the OCLC database. Includes I and K level standards.

      3. OCLC-MARC Code ListsIncludes list of codes for countries of publication and list of language codes.

      4. Diacritics and special characters.

      5. OCLC Authorities User Guide.

    4. Library of Congress cataloging tools.

      1. Cataloging Service Bulletin (CSB). Quarterly publication documenting Library of Congress's decisions and procedures regarding all phases of cataloging. Includes Library of Congress rule interpretations (LCRI) for AACR2.

      2. The National Union Catalog, Pre-1956 Imprints ("Mansell"). Cumulation of printed cards from the Library of Congress and other American libraries. Complete set located in the Reference Room and on the fifth floor (East).

      3. National Union Catalog: Books. Catalog records contributed by the Library of Congress and other U.S. libraries. Complete hardcopy set through 1982 in the Reference Room. Microfiche edition from June 1983- is little used but is located in the Alderman Conference Room, Room 423.

      4. Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Set of approved subject headings. The most complete up-to-date compilation is online. The library also has the cumulated quarterly microfiche edition, housed with the Library of Congress microfiche shelflist.

      5. Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings. Library of Congress handbook for the use of their subject heading system; includes both internal Library of Congress policies, and application of the policies for other libraries.

      6. Library of Congress Subject Headings: A Guide to Subdivision Practice. Explanations of subdivisions.

      7. Library of Congress Period Subdivisions Under Names of Places. List of chronological subdivisions arranged by geographic place.

      8. Library of Congress Classification Schedules. Official schedules for creation of Library of Congress call numbers.

      9. Library of Congress Shelflist. Microfiche set of printed cards arranged by Library of Congress classification; through 1978-1979.

      10. Subject Cataloging Manual: Shelflisting. Library of Congress manual for shelflisting; includes internal Library of Congress policies and procedures.

      11. Subject Cataloging Manual: Classification. Library of Congress manual for classification; includes internal Library of Congress policies and procedures.

      12. Library of Congress Name Authorities. Most current version of Library of Congress headings for personal and corporate names and uniform titles is available online on OCLC. Also available in microfiche, housed with the Library of Congress microfiche shelflist.

      13. Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books.

      14. Standard Citation Forms for Published Bibliographies and Catalogs Used In Rare Book Cataloging.

      15. Transliterations of letters in non-Roman alphabet.

    5. The Classifiers Guide to Library of Congress Class H.

    6. Notes for Catalogers: A Sourcebook for Use with AACR2 (1985).

    7. Notes in the Catalog Record: based on AACR2 and LC Rule Interpretations . (1989)

    8. The World of Learning. A directory of learned institutions and societies. Latest edition in Reference.

    9. Van Nostrands' Scientific Encyclopedia.

    10. Manual of European Languages for Librarians. (1975) Arranged by language, gives information on grammar, numbers, alphabet, etc.

  2. SERIALS CATALOGING

    1. Library of Congress cataloging tools

    2. New Serial Titles -- A Union List of Serials held by libraries in the United States and Canada.

  3. AUDIO-VISUAL CATALOGING

    1. Cataloging Motion Pictures and Videorecordings by Nancy B. Olson.

    2. Cataloging of Audiovisual Materials by Nancy B. Olson.

  4. COMPUTER FILE CATALOGING

    1. Cataloging Internet Resources, a Manual and Practical Guide by Nancy B. Olson (Dublin: OCLC, 1995). URL:ftp://rsch.oclc.org/pub/internet_cataloging_project/Manual.txt

      This manual was developed to assist OCLC users in preparing bibliographic descriptions of resources available through the Internet. This manual provides a convenient single source of information by combining a discussion of cataloging rules, appropriate MARC fields, and illustrative examples.

    2. Guidelines for Electronic Text Encoding and Interchange, version P3 by C. M. Sperberg-McQueen and Lou Burnard (Chicago: Text Encoding Initiative, 1994).

      These Guidelines address the problems of describing an encoded text so that the text itself, its source, its encoding, and its revisions are thoroughly documented. It provides detailed descriptions of the use and application of SGML tags.

    3. Oxford Text Archive Short List of Texts (currently issued quarterly).

      List of texts held by the Oxford Text Archive (OTA) that includes such information as author, title and language of the text; information on the depositor; source of the electronic text; availability.

    4. The SGML Primer (3rd ed., 1991).

      An introduction to SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) and to DTDs (Document Type Definitions).

    5. Cataloging Computer Files by Nancy B. Olson (Lake Crystal, MN: soldier Creek Press, 1992).

    6. Cataloging Microcomputer Software: A Manual to Accompany AACR2, Chapter 9, Computer Files by Nancy B. Olson (Englewood, CO: Libraries Unlimited, 1988).

    7. ISBD(CF): International Standard Bibliographic Description for Computer Fields: Draft for Worldwide Review, 2nd. ed. (Frankfurt am Main: IFLA Universal Bibliographic Control and International MARC Programme, 1995).

  5. MAPS CATALOGING

    1. Library of Congress Tools prepared by its Geography and Map Division:

      1. Map Cataloging Manual - gives detailed instructions concerning how the Library of Congress catalogs maps, including both descriptive cataloging and subject analysis.

      2. Geographic Cutters - Microfiche set in loose-leaf binder giving the geographic cutters used by Library of Congress for the United States. Includes cutters for regions, states, regions within states, counties, and cities.

    2. Other tools:

      1. Cartographic Materials (chapter 2) from Media Access and Organization by Carolyn O. Frost. Helpful pointers on interpreting the AACR2 chapter on cartographic materials. Includes examples.

      2. ILA AACR2 Specialized Level Workshop Cartographic Materials Workbook. Photocopy of handout. Detailed information on the determination of map scales.
