I. Introduction
- A sound recording is a recording on which sound vibrations have been registered
by mechanical or electrical means so that the sound may be reproduced. Nonmusical
sound recordings include but are not limited to recordings of sound effects; bird
calls; physical exercise recordings (e.g., aerobics workouts, etc.) that consist
of spoken, shouted, sung, or chanted instructions; stories, plays, lectures, etc.,
all of which may or may not have incidental music accompaniment.
- For procedures on cataloging musical sound recordings, see Chapter XIII.
- For cataloging monographs with accompanying sound cassettes, see III.F and Appendix 18.
II. Cataloging Procedures
If matching copy on OCLC is found, record will be downloaded into VIRGO and item will be passed on to Sound Recordings Cataloger to finish cataloging. If "help" or no entry is found on OCLC, item will be given to Original Cataloger for processing.
Sound recordings are cataloged using AACR2, 2nd ed., rev., Chapter 6, and Bibliographic Formats and Standards.
