Renewals
Materials may be renewed through Virgo User Services, in person, by telephone, or by e-mailing lib-circ@virginia.edu. Recalled items, periodicals, videos and some other special materials may not be renewed. Interlibrary Loan materials should be renewed through that office. Call (434) 924-3875
Recalls
Users who have a need for material currently checked out can place a recall on the charged item. Recalled items must be returned within 7 days of the recall notice. Recalled items accrue recall overdue fines of $1.00/day. Once the material is returned, the requesting user will be notified and the item will be held at the specified Circulation Desk for 7 days after which it will be re-shelved or circulated to the next waiting user.
Return of Materials
Most materials charged from any UVA library may be returned to any UVA library. Most libraries have an outdoor book return. Alderman Library has a drive-up book return in the wall near the rear service entrance on Newcomb Road. Suspension of Borrowing Privileges/Settling Accounts
When fines accrue to $10.00 or more, the user is billed. Bills should be paid within 30 days and can be paid at any University Library. Bills unpaid after 30 days are referred to the University Student Financial Services for collection. Library privileges are suspended and students are barred from registration, graduation and other University-wide privileges until the account is settled.
When materials are not returned and become long overdue the user is billed for replacement cost and library privileges are suspended. If materials are not returned or paid for within 30 days of billing, the bill is referred to the University Student Financial Services for collection. This action bars students from registration, graduation and other University-wide privileges.
Accounts that have not been referred to Student Financial Services may be cleared at any Library circulation unit by returning the items and paying the fines. If the account has been referred to Student Financial Services, payment must be made there (Carruthers Hall). Prompt response to bills from the Library will avoid referral.
Carrels
Study carrels are available in most libraries for master and doctoral candidates. Due to space limits, each library has different rules regarding eligibility. Materials kept in a carrel must be charged out at the Circulation Desk and are subject to recall.
Confidentiality
User records and circulation records are private information protected by state and federal law. Access to a user's record is available only to that user.
