Digital Collections -- General Rights and Use
All objects in the University of Virginia Library Digital Collections available through this Repository and interface have one of three levels of access rights:
- Publicly Accessible - available for viewing and noncommercial educational and research use, including classroom teaching, for the UVa community and to the general public.
- Accessible to UVA only -- only available to the University of Virginia community for viewing or noncommercial educational and research use, including classroom teaching, on-grounds or via authenticated off-grounds use using UVA Anywhere.
- Accessible to VIVA only -- only available to the Virtual Virginia (VIVA) Consortium community for viewing or noncommercial educational and research use.
While many of the objects are publicly accessible, they are not all in the public domain. The vast majority are copyrighted to the University of Virginia or another owning institution or individual, and have been made available here for limited uses.
When using objects from these collections, it is your responsibility to observe the stated access rights, laws of copyright, and educational fair use guidelines. Where applicable, you must contact the repository that owns the image to obtain reproductions and/or to request permission to use the images. Each collection may have specific copyright restrictions and usage rules. Responsibility for securing any necessary permissions ultimately rests with the individual desiring to use the item, who must assume all responsibility for complying with copyright laws or other use restrictions. The University of Virginia Library cannot assist in obtaining copyright permissions unless the University of Virginia is listed as the copyright holder. If copyright permissions are obtained, the University of Virginia Library can, in some cases, provide digital files for approved uses.
