Digital Content Production Standards Planning Team
Summary Recommendations
- Apply digital object
creation standards appropriate to the purpose of the digital object as outlined
in this report.
- Create digital objects
at the highest practical quality appropriate to the object's purpose in
order to provide 'headroom' for any future processing of the original digital
object. (See Audio discussion.)
- Review digital object
creation and storage standards yearly to assess whether changes in standards
for specific data types or formats based on technological improvements require
changes in the library?s digital object production standards.
- Manage archived digital
objects, migrating and/or refreshing them as appropriate to the format,
object, and purpose until digital preservation standards are established.
- Given the current instability
of audio and video digital archival formats, preserve and provide access
to analog versions as audio and video digital items are selected and collected
for digital delivery.
- Develop standards for
data in mixed formats as technologies and mainstream practices stabilize,
particularly for websites and synchronized multi-media.
- Review standards for
archiving GIS data in a future report given the multiple data and software
issues related to its delivery.
