Digital Content Selection Planning Team
1. Background
The Library has
policies, procedures, and practices in place that guide the selection and
development of print collections. The Library now needs to more formally develop
guidelines and practices that inform and develop our digital collections (both
purchased and locally created) so that digital materials can be integrated
into collections and effectively delivered to users. The development of digital
collections should coalesce with print collections. However, there are a number
of new issues that arise when evaluating and selecting digital materials for
the Library's collections. The Digital Library Federation clearly states in
its narrative about digital collections that "Decisions taken when creating
a digital information resource (e.g. about its contents, format, data model,
level of description, etc.) impact directly upon how, at what cost, and by
whom that resource can be used, integrated into collections, maintained, and
supported." (from Digital
Library Federation). The Library needs to set up a process for helping
subject librarians select digital content and for setting priorities for local
digitization.
2. Charge
The Digital Content
Selection Planning Team will issue recommendations on policies and processes
to enhance the acquisition/collection of digital content. The underlying principle
is integration of digital content, whether purchased or non-purchased, into
the UVA Library collections for uniform delivery to users.
The team will:
- Identify existing guidelines
and policies among peer institutions.
- Identify methods to
help subject librarians evaluate digital content and to involve subject
librarians in the development of new kinds of scholarly collections.
- Develop guidelines
and other materials that help inform local collection development decision
for digital content, including lease/purchase and local/remote storage
decisions.
- Establish a planning
process/decision tree for local creation of digital content.
- Prepare an implementation
plan that addresses technical, educational (staff and user), workflow,
resource, and staffing implications.
