LofT Committees - 2001

University of Virginia Library
Information Communities Planning Team

1. Background

At the center of the Library of Tomorrow is a concept we are calling Information Communities. Information communities are learning and teaching environments in which subject-driven websites are developed around print and digital versions of our collections and the teaching interests of our faculty members. An information community consists of people (faculty, students, librarians, authors, publishers), collections (text, image, video, audio, map, data), and the tools needed for interacting with those collections. Information Communities will foster interdisciplinary and collaborative research and publication amongst scholars with common interests. Existing library services will be reshaped to support information communities and the expanded capabilities they will bring to instruction and research. See the "Tibetan and Himalayan Digital Library" at http://www.lib.virginia.edu/infocom/tibet/ as an example of a developing Information Community.

2. Charge

The Information Communities Planning Team will create guidelines and implementation plans for developing and supporting information communities for up to 5 pilot projects including the Tibetan project and most likely communities for the environment, the fine arts, and poetry.

The team will:

  • Further define the concept of information communities and develop a model for promoting the concept.
  • Assess commonalities and identify best practices in current information community projects.
  • Recommend a planning process for assigning priority to the creation of information communities and the digitized local content to support them.
  • Prepare guidelines for developing team structures to support and manage new information communities.
  • Prepare an implementation plan that addresses technical, educational (staff and user), workflow, resource, and staffing implications.
