Notes is a periodic newsletter designed to keep UVa Library staff informed about
new and interesting digital initiatives being undertaken throughout the Library,
upcoming speakers and presentations, and other news.
In this Issue:
Library Administration Responds to LofT Recommendations The Administrative Group has completed its review of the LofT recommendations and has issued a response and initial staffing plan. The initial staffing outline describes 12.5 FTE staff lines that were recommended by the planning teams. The administration will work to develop new staff lines and to determine which positions can be filled by internal reassignments. Both the response and staffing plan will be available on the Library of Tomorrow website (http://www.lib.virginia.edu/digital/info/LofT.html) very soon. We will also be holding an informational meeting in the very near future - please stay tuned for more information on this.
Judy Thomas and Chris Ruotolo participated in a DLF working group on May 30 to begin work on developing benchmarks and best practices for preservation reformatting. The outcome of this working group will inform and impact our decisions as we develop our centralized digital production facility and begin to undertake systematic reformatting tasks. You can find out more about the Digital Library Federation at: http://www.diglib.org/. Michael Furlough to present at ECAI Michael Furlough will be traveling to Sidney, Australia next month to present a paper on creating the Tibetan-Himalayan digital library gazetteer. This gazetteer is an essential component to the Tibetan-Himalayan Digital Library, and to the evolving Tibetan Information Community project. Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative (ECAI) Atlas Teams of area specialists, in conjunction with ECAI Technical Teams, are producing an interactive electronic atlas of the world from which selected data from regions, eras, and disciplines can be instantaneously accessed. You can learn more about ECAI at: http://www.ecai.org, and the Tibetan-Himalayan Digital Library at http://iris.lib.virginia.edu/tibet/. LofT Discussions: Image Formats TIFF, GIF, JPG or SID? The
next LofT Discussion is scheduled for June 21st. Judy Thomas (jet3h)
will present an overview of the different digital image formats we will encounter
in developing digital collections, and will explain the benefits, trade-offs
and uses of each format. Time for questions and conversation will follow.
Please stay tuned for registration information from Suzanne Bombard (seb8v)
for this session. As always, we encourage all library staff to attend these
discussions and we welcome your feedback on these discussions and suggestions
for future topics. |
