In this Issue:
The development sites for the American Studies and Tibetan and Himalayan Information Communities have both been updated recently with additional directory listings. The American Studies site will be demonstrated at a meeting on May 24 to a group of visiting scholars attending an event sponsored by the UVa International Institute of American Studies. Library "Channel" in the UVa Portal ITC has been developing a prototype university portal site -- MyUVa -- based on the JASIG uPortal open source implementation. The MyUVa portal infrastructure is designed to give users easy access to the data and applications that each needs most with a customizable interface. Applications in MyUVa are displayed as "channels" arranged on tabs, but users can delete or add channels and tabs as they see fit. The project is in pilot mode, meaning that only a selected segment of the university's population is currently set up to use it. Current channels include headlines from the Cavalier Daily, Toolkit access, access to Corp Time, access to email, local weather, and numerous news resources. The Library is working with ITC to create a basic Library channel that includes a VIRGO search form, Library web site search, and access to Reference Chat. Discussions are also under way to potentially develop channels for high-demand content resources. Digital Library Production Services DLPS staff have been participating in the process to create selection and preservation procedures and policies and creating pipelines and work flows for digitizing images and text. Their recent projects include processing 37 volumes of Ed Lay's Virginia Road Tracings, 30 American History titles, 5,000 Fine Arts slides, 60 electronic theses and dissertations, and the CITE electronic journal, as well as converting image and text collections for the Central Digital Repository testbed. Coming up for DLPS are sessions to help train selectors on how to make decisions regarding digital collection-building. Central Digital Repository The Central Repository team is preparing for a test of the Repository (our digital library object management, access, and delivery system) starting this July. The testbed will include Early American Fiction electronic texts, architectural images of Barcelona created as part of a multi-year studio in Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and digital images licensed from Saskia and AMICO. LofT 9 Presentation on May 1 On May 1 at 3 PM in Clemons 201, Diane Walker will lead a presentation on Service Models for the Library of Tomorrow and the issues involved in implementing them uniformly.
