Information Communities: New URL and Design

The sites for the American Studies and Tibetan and Himalayan Information Communities have both been updated recently with a great new design developed by Garry Barrow in Comm Pub. The Info Communities also have a new URL: http://infocomm.lib.virginia.edu/.

Presentation to International Center for American Studies

On May 24 Chris Ruotolo and Leslie Johnston gave a presentation on the American Studies Information Community to a group of visiting scholars attending an event sponsored by the newly formed UVa International Institute of American Studies. This new Center is headed by Stephen Cushman, Robert C. Taylor Professor of American Literature and director of the interdisciplinary undergraduate major in American Studies, and "encourages excellence in research and teaching about the United States, particularly research and teaching informed by points of view outside the United States." This was the first public presentation of the American Studies Information Community, and the response was quite positive, especially to the concept of cross-referenced vetted directories of resources and the promise of multiple options for communication, from email to threaded discussions to real-time electronic conferences.

Library UVa Portal "Channel" Update

The Library is working with ITC to create the basic Library channel that includes a VIRGO search form, Library web site search, and access to Reference Chat. A prototype is in process for release in summer.

Presentations Online

The LofT presentation by Diane Walker is now available online at the LofT Discussion site. The site also contains links to other presentation of interest, including one by Paul Eggert and Paul Berry of the Australian Centre for Scholarly Editions on the Authenticated Electronic Editions Project, and a presentation by Heather MacNeil from the University of British Columbia on "Dimensions of Document Trustworthiness."
