LofT Notes
is a periodic newsletter designed to keep UVa Library staff informed about
new and interesting digital initiatives being undertaken throughout the Library,
upcoming speakers and presentations, and other news.
In this Issue:
The upgrade of VIRGO to version Unicorn 2002 is scheduled for the Fall Reading Holiday on Monday, October 7. Testing is currently underway on the new version, and will continue for most of September. Features in this new release include:
The upgrade is planned for the early morning hours of October 7. Due to the speed of the new VIRGO server, we anticipate that work will be complete before 7:00 AM with very little impact on staff or public users during the upgrade.
DLPS would like to announce
the development of a software tool in support of the Art and Architecture
Laptop Pilot. The ImageCollector application is a graphic tool designed specifically
for selecting and downloading images. The images are ones that have been chosen
by selectors or participants of the Laptop Pilot, and the image sources originate
from the Fine Arts Library, Macintire Department of Art, and private collections.
The images were scanned in various Library locations, including DLPS, Instructional
Scanning Services, and the Fine Arts Library. The ImageCollector can be used
only from an on-Grounds computer, and support of this application for this
project will continue through to the end of December, 2002. http://image.lib.virginia.edu/ltp/imagecollector/imagecollector.html
On October 29, 2002 at 3:30 PM in Clemons 201, Leslie Johnston will provide a status report on Digital Library activities, as well as give a demonstration of projects completed to date. There will be time for questions at the end of the formal discussion. A number of previous LofT presentations are available on the web at: http://www.lib.virginia.edu/digital/info/discussions/
The prototype Library Channel available via the UPortal has been updated, and now includes the ability to view circulation status. The Channel also includes links to Real Time Reference (this will be removed when this service is shut down), Reference Contact information, Reference Email, and allows Virgo searching and a search of the Library's web site. Go to: and log on using your UVa Unix ID (your email ID) and password. Click on "customize" to change the layout of any of your pages, select any of your pages, click on "New Channel" where you would like the channel to appear, select "Applications and Services" from the list of categories, and you will find "Library Search and Circulation" among the options. Highlight it and click on "Add" to put this link on your page. To be able to view circulation status (items checked out, bills, recalls, etc.), you must enter your UVa ID number and Library PIN. You have the option to "cache" (store and save) your login so that the status is always displayed; you may always opt not to cache the information and log in each time. You do not need to log in to perform searches. All searches and service requests from the status display will send you into the VIRGO environment. This is the second release of the channel, and any and all feedback on functionality are welcome. The UPortal does place limitations on the layout, but suggestions in that area are also welcome. Send comments to johnston@virginia.edu.
