UVa Community Digitization Guidelines

The Library has developed a document that provides guidance and minimum recommendations for the digitization of images, texts, and data that are in line with the Library's current practice for members of the UVa community who are planning digitization projects.

Central Digital Repository

So far over 5,000 images have been loaded into the Central Digital Repository for use by a group of faculty from Architectural History, Art History, Religious Studies, and Landscape Architecture who will be testing the Repository and its tools in instruction during Spring 2005. Over 5,000 additional images will be loaded during the term, as will over 100 electronic texts.

Japanese Text Initiative goes Dynamic

The Japanese Text Initiative (JTI) now delivers its recently processed texts dynamically through XML, replacing its static HTML delivery of previous editions. These new titles display Japanese etexts in both horizontal and the traditional vertical formats, and with and without "furigana" (aka "rubi") small characters that appear about or beside the text as a phonetic comment and reading aid.

Library Staff Presentation Series

Judy Thomas has organized a Library Staff Presentation series that gives Library staff the opportunity to share reports on their projects and activities. Many of the presentations - which cover a wide variety of topics - have already been delivered at outside venues - conferences, workshops, festivals - and are being reprised for Library community. This is our chance to learn more about the kinds of professional activities in which our colleagues are engaged. The series is held once or twice a month from 3:30-4:30 on Thursdays in Clemons 407. Look for email from Judy to the libstaff list about the schedule.

American Periodicals Series Online

Formerly available only on microfilm, the American Periodicals Series Online spans three significant publishing eras -- the birth of American periodical journalism (1741-1800), the era of growth and change (1800 - 1850) and the volatile, ante-bellum slavery debate, Civil War, and Reconstruction (1850-1900). Over 1,100 American periodicals are part of the project, including special interest and general magazines, literary and professional journals, children's and women's magazines, and many historically significant periodical titles.

UVa now has electronic access to more than 660,000 Sanborn maps charting the growth and development of more than 12,000 American towns and cities. Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are highly detailed city plans providing researchers with a wealth of information about urban change in American cities during the first half of the twentieth century.
