LofT Reports - 2001

University of Virginia Library
Resource Management Planning Team
Summary Recommendations

  • Complete inventory of digital collections.
  • Continue the collaborative process with all stakeholders to develop standards for the four types of metadata, including common elements and content standards. Plan for on-going involvement by stakeholders as standards develop.
  • Follow current standards for mark-up and metadata creation, whenever an object is created, and update existing digital objects and metadata as needed. Use standard language (authority files/thesauri) for the content of relevant metadata, i.e., names and subject terms.
  • Implement a workflow where the creators of digital objects are involved in the process of metadata creation, and in the adherence to standards. Catalogers would review, standardize, and enrich the metadata.
  • Develop a plan for the long-term preservation of digital objects. Preservation cannot be overlooked and is necessary to maintain our investment in the creation of digital objects.
  • Support digital resource management activities with the addition of staff where needed including programmers, catalogers and a preservation specialist.
