LofT Reports - 2001

Approved Library of Tomorrow Staffing

In response to the Library of Tomorrow Report, "Positioning for our Future", the Administrative Group has approved a staffing plan for implementation of recommendations made by LofT planning teams. We plan to consider reassignment of existing staff as well as seek 3-5 new positions to insure we have enough staff to accomplish our goals.

The information below provides a brief description of the new LofT roles.  These are not official job descriptions but provide information about the types of positions we will fill.  If you have questions or want more information, feel free to contact Al Napier or Gail Oltmanns.

Central production facility

A central production facility will be created to allow us to amass digital content for the library in an efficient and cost-effective manner. This facility will be established as an internal digital collections-building unit within Central Services, and operational aspects of the unit will be determined once it is created.
  • Manager  (1.0)
The manager will oversee digital collection-building activity that includes selection, acquisition, creation, and other processes related to delivery of digital content through a central repository. Initial priorities for the unit will be set by content needed for pilot information communities, by preservation of brittle books, and by collection needs.
  • Associate Manager (1.0)
The associate manager will supervise workflows, programmers, and student assistants.  Specific duties will be determined once a manager is chosen.
  • Text/XML Specialist/Programmers (1.5)
  • Image Specialist/Programmer (1.0)
Format based specialists will develop tools to assist in the migration of existing objects into a repository-ready form, develop appropriate metadata creation systems, and serve as technical specialists for information communities and other digital projects.
  • Processing Staff (2.0)
Processing staff will make content ready for vendors to convert to digital formats, as well as prepare content for inclusion in the digital library.  Work includes SGML and/or XML tagging in addition to insuring appropriate standards are applied to digital objects added to the central digital repository.

Information Communities

Creating successful model communities will be critical for demonstrating the value of the concept.  We expect initial pilot projects will demonstrate effective delivery of information, new functionality, ease of use, and enhanced availability of content.    Development of initial communities will focus on creating an infrastructure for models that can scale for future use.
  • Information Communities Manager (1.0)
This position will report to the Director, Digital Services Integration (DSI) and will coordinate the Community Coordinators, communicate with the rest of the Library and beyond, coordinate all the relevant disparate activities and act as a clearinghouse.
  • Information Community Coordinators (3.5)
Content knowledge will be important for coordinators, but their primary role will be that of project manager and liaison for faculty and library participants.  Each community coordinator will direct project progress, juggle deadlines, grants, etc.  The initial communities will be:
    • American Studies Coordinator (1.0)
    • Tibet and Himalayan Coordinator (1.0)
    • Poetry Coordinator (0.5)
    • Modelling Virginia Coordinator (0.5)
    • Architecture Coordinator 0.5)

Web and Portal Development

Development of a Library portal will bring enriched functionality to the Librarys on-line users.   The portal will be developed in concert with the University Portal efforts that are already under way.  The DSI Director will be responsible for oversight of the portal development, and the Communications and Publications section and User Services will have specific implementation responsibilities.
  • Portal Content/Services Specialist (.5)
  • This position will work with the DSI Director, User Services, and other units as appropriate to develop and evaluate content and services to be added to the Portal.
  • Web Technical Manager (1.0)
The technical manager will work with units across the Library to assist them in implementing a consistent look and feel for Library web pages.  This position will work alongside the web design manager in the Communications and Publications section.
