Digital Initiatives: Metadata

UVa Metadata

The Central Digital Repository is comprised of digital objects produced by the Electronic Centers, Information Communities, the Digital Library Production Service, and commercial vendors. These objects are expressed as METS encoded text documents and can contain information marked up in elements from external standards as necessary. In this system we assume that there are two distinct categories of information regarding the objects that can be indexed and used for descriptive and administrative (including technical) purposes. These locally-defined element sets are collectively referred to as UVa Metadata, and are XML-encoded and have DTDs. Structural metadata about collections of digital objects are provided by separate higher-level digital objects. Also in use is the General Descriptive Modeling Scheme (GDMS), a formal information structure to construct descriptive models for collections of digital resources developed by the UVa Library.

Metadata Steering Group (MSG)

Charge of the group, minutes, email list, policy reports & recommendations, and archives of previous metadata planning groups

UVa Metadata Descriptive Elements (UVa DescMeta)

Elements describing the intellectual content of the object, including the minimal requirements for ingest into the UVa Digital Library

UVa Metadata Administrative Elements (UVa AdminMeta)

Elements describing the provenance (history), source, rights, and technical specifications (format and internal structure) of each datastream in the digital object, and for the object as a whole

GDMS

Mappings

Mappings of international standards to UVa Metadata and to GDMS

Community Digitization Guidelines: Describing Your Resources

Guide to creating metadata for your digital collections -- especially if you intend for the Library to ultimately take ownership of your resources and/or commit to digital preservation. These guidelines are part of a full report (University of Virginia Community Digitization Guidelines) which includes standards for scanning images, marking up texts, creating audio, video files, statistical data files, etc., all in line with the UVa Library's current practice

Decisions and Best Practices

Collection of decisions and best practices endorsed by the MSG, including content standards and workflow

Readings & Resources

Collection of readings and links for understanding metadata, including markup and content standards
