The repository is comprised of digital objects produced by the Electronic Centers, Information Communities, the Digital Library Production Service, and commercial vendors. We assume that there are two distinct categories of information regarding the objects that can be indexed and used for descriptive and administrative (including technical) purposes. These locally-defined element sets are collectively referred to as UVa Metadata, and are XML-encoded and have DTDs.

Objects are often encoded using various external content standards. Electronic texts are usually encoded or transformed into TEI document instances. Geospatial resources are often encoded according to the FGDC or DDI content standards. Documentary images are marked up in the VRA Core element set; additionally, images from dozens of institutions are available as part of AMICO, following their record standard. Archival finding aids are encoded according to the EAD. Bibliographic objects are cataloged in MARC, and marked up in MARC21. Also in use is the General Descriptive Modeling Scheme (GDMS) is a formal information structure to construct descriptive models for collections of digital resources developed by the UVa Library

In order to facilitate discovery and administration, we provide mappings from elements of the various content standards to corresponding elements within our UVa Metadata descriptive and administrative standards.
