IRIS to GDMS Metadata Mapping

Metadata Home > Metadata Mappings > IRIS to GDMS Metadata Mapping

IRIS is a relational database developed in FileMakerPro used for cataloging cultural heritage objects and their images. IRIS was built by five institutions: Brown University, Roger Williams University, Wesleyan University, Trinity College, and Smith College and is currently licensed by 15 institutions across the United States. UVa uses IRIS as its back-end collection management system for objects and images using the VRA Core and the Guidelines for Cataloging Cultural Objects.

The General Descriptive Modeling Scheme (GDMS) is a UVa project to create a formal information structure that can be used to construct descriptive models of real-world or imaginary phenomena to create contexts for collections of digital resources. The content standard for GDMS is available at: http://www.lib.virginia.edu/digital/metadata/gdms.html
