Naming Conventions for Central Digital Repository Files and Directories

The naming conventions for the Central Digital Repository files and directories are based on the ISO 9660 standard. The UVa Central Digital Repository convention is as follows:

File names of up to 32 characters
File extensions of 3 or 4 characters (.htm or .html, .tif or .tiff, etc.)
Form of the file name shall be 32.3 or 32.4
Acceptable characters are:
A-Z
a-z
0-9
.
_ (underscore)

Directories are allowed names up to 32 characters, using the same group of allowable characters. Directories do not have extensions.

This convention is open to review if at any time the 32 character length becomes restrictive.
