Digital Library Implementation, Phase 2

Digital Library Implementation Home

Phase 2 of the implementation will concentrate on getting the first version of three kinds of texts with associated images into the digital library. These include a set of prose texts marked up in TEI that have been created by DLPS, finding aids marked up in EAD that were created by Special Collections and a set of XML files that are marked up in the GDMS system created locally that describe artworks and architectural sites. Each of these collections has images associated with them.

These collections were selected because they are a set of XML texts and images that represent a variety of problems that are shared by a large percentage of our existing digital collections. By developing a coherent approach to these three collections simultaneously we hope to have a manageable set of data to get started with to establish a scalable approach for three major streams of our production of new materials. A successful implementation will give us a base set of content models and experience with what it takes to batch process resources for each of them.

Collections:

Texts – Texts included in this phase include those that DLPS completed during 2003, known as Q3 and Q4, plus the Westward Expansion texts. These collections are all represented by XML files marked up in TEI, some have full transcriptions of the text, some only tags to related images of pages of the books.

Finding Aids – Only the finding aids that represent collections in the UVA Special Collections Library will be included in this phase. These are all XML files marked up in EAD. A small number of the finding aids have images associated with them.

Art and Architecture – These include the four collections that we used in phase 1, Jefferson Country, Barcelona, Catlin and Fowler, as well as a collection of images created for Bill Sherman, an architecture professor. Each artwork or architectural site is represented by an XML file marked up in GDMS. Each of the GDMS files has one or more images associated with it.
