Subject Librarians

Subject Librarians are assigned to each academic department to support teaching and research needs. They select books, journals, databases and other materials in their discipline. The Library also has established approval plans whereby scholarly titles of major publishers are acquired automatically. A list of these publishers is available. Purchase suggestions can be submitted through an electronic form which is forwarded to the appropriate subject librarian.

Subject librarians also keep their departments informed about new resources and services and learn from the departments about their library needs. They give instruction in the use of the Library, handle specialized reference needs, and maintain subject web pages identifying relevant Internet resources at U.Va. and elsewhere.

Contact the Darden, Law, and Health Sciences Libraries to learn about similar services.
