The following is a brief list of dictionaries of British biography. Additional biographical information on British citizens can be found in Foreign Sources -- Peerage and under General Aids -- Biographical Dictionaries.

Alderman Reference CT 773 .B6 1965	Boase, Frederic. Modern English Biography; Containing Many Thousand Concise Memoirs of Persons Who Have Died between the Years 1851-1900 with an Index of the Interesting Matter. Reprint. London: Frank Cass, 1965. 6 vols. A valuable source for biographical information on the lesser known personalities of the nineteenth century. The work has a greater coverage of the national and local celebrities of the nineteenth century than the Dictionary of National Biography (below). The volumes contain approximately 30,000 entries. Sources of biographical information are noted, and there is an excellent analytical index in each volume.

Alumni Cantabrigienses: A Biographical List of All Known Students, Graduates, and Holders of Office at the University of Cambridge, from the Earliest Times to 1900. Comp. John Venn and J. A. Venn. Cambridge: The University Press, 1922-54. 6 vols. Entries include date of matriculation and age at the time of matriculation, college entered, and degrees earned. Often parents' names and the names of relatives who attended Cambridge are included. The arrangement is alphabetical by surname.

Each article is signed, and bibliographies and sources of information are provided. The arrangement is alphabetical.
