Patrons interested in genealogical research involving University of Virginia alumni will find a variety of helpful sources in Alderman Library.

The Reference Department has a complete collection of University of Virginia catalogs and student directories. A vertical file of material related to all aspects of the university's history, including biographical material on past and present faculty members, noteworthy alumni and students, and student organizations, is available in the Reference Office. The university newspapers, College Topics and The Cavalier Daily, the University of Virginia Alumni News (later titled Virginia) and the Alumni Bulletin are also available in the Reference Room. There is an incomplete index to the Alumni News and the Alumni Bulletin available for patron use. The Cavalier Daily card index, begun in the 1890s, is shelved near the bound copies of that newspaper in the Reference Room and is available for patron use.

The Special Collections Library has the University Matriculation Books, as well as the minutes of the Faculty and the Board of Visitors. These manuscript sources can be extremely helpful in locating biographical information on University alumni.
