Welcome to the University of Virginia. We hope that your time here is both fun and productive.

The University Library is here to help, so please let us know what you need and we’ll do our best to provide it for you.

Library Web Site

The University Library’s web site offers access to databases, Internet sources, VIRGO (our online catalog), and more.

Collections

Within the 15 University libraries we have almost 5 million volumes of printed material. But that’s not all. At various libraries you can also find videos, DVDs, maps, music, images, journals, indexes, government and geostatistical information, manuscripts and rare books.

Digital Resources

The U.Va. Library offers many ways to create and access digital resources, including image scanning, video editing, and online materials in both text and image formats.

Computing

Computing resources (PCs, Macs, scanners, etc.) are available in most libraries with some facilities housing computer labs managed by ITC, U.Va.’s computing office. You can check out a laptop (U.Va. students and faculty only) or bring in your own and connect to the wireless network.

Videos and DVDs

The Robertson Media Center on the 3rd floor of Clemons Library has over 20,000 movies that you can borrow for home or to view in the library. Movies range from popular and cult favorites such as I, Robot and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, to scholarly films such as Against the Odds: The Artists of the Harlem Renaissance.

Late Hours

Did you know that Clemons Library is open 24/5 during the regular semester? Other libraries are also open late, some until midnight or 2:00 am.

Library Instruction

“What’s VIRGO?” “How can I find articles in InfoTrac?” “Is Google a research database?” Confused about how to do your research? Don’t worry about it. You can ask for help in person, over the phone, via e-mail, and through IM chat.

Research Help

Need more in-depth help? Schedule a one-on-one tutorial, and a librarian will arrange a convenient time to help you with your questions.

Access from Dorm or Home

You can have full access to all of the Library’s online resources from your dorm room or home. To connect to licensed databases from home, all you need to do is configure your computer’s browser for proxy use; instructions are on our web site.

Study Space

Many libraries, including Clemons and Brown Science and Engineering, have group study rooms that can be reserved ahead of time or used on a first-come, first-served basis. Check with the library’s Service Desk for more details.

Checking Out Materials

Most items in the U.Va. libraries can be checked out, though loan periods differ depending on the item and the borrower.

Online Renewals

You don’t have to come into the library to renew items you’ve checked out. To renew online just select Renew Items from the VIRGO menu. (Not all items are renewable, however.)

Interlibrary Loan

Just because we don’t have it doesn’t mean we can’t get it for you. Students, faculty, and staff have fast access to materials from libraries outside U.Va. See www.lib.virginia.edu/leo or choose Interlibrary Services from the VIRGO menu.
