September 25, 2001 - Karin Wittenborg, University Librarian, has announced the appointment of Ann Whiteside as the new Fine Arts Librarian.
Whiteside comes to U.Va. from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where for the past six years, she served as the Visual Resources Librarian.
"Ann brings many important skills and a varied arts background to the Library," said Jane Penner, Music Librarian and head of the search committee for the position. "Her experiences in planning for new libraries and in prioritizing the needs for library collections and staff are particularly useful as we plan for a new Arts Library."
As recommended by the Virginia 2020 Fine and Performing Arts Planning Commission, the University has announced plans for a new Arts Grounds, which includes an Arts Library at the center of the visual and performing arts departments. The new library will combine the collections of the current Music Library and the Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library.
"I look forward to working with library staff and the University in planning for this new library," said Whiteside. "In support of the initiative to enrich and expand the arts at U.Va, I plan to increase the digital art collections, while at the same time, maintain the print collections and our strong emphasis on customer service."
Whiteside received her B.A. in art history from Boston College in 1983 and Masters of Library Science with a concentration in Art Librarianship from Simmons College in Boston in 1993.
She moved to Charlottesville from Boston earlier in the month along with her husband and children.
