September 6, 2001 - Again this academic year, Clemons Library is open 24 hours a day. The library operates from 10:00a.m.Sunday through midnight, Friday. Saturday, the library is open 9a.m. to midnight. Access to the building is restricted to U.Va. students, faculty, and staff between 2a.m. and 7a.m. and a current University picture ID is required for entry after 2a.m.
"Last year students took full advantage of Clemons 24-hour service," said Vicki Coleman, Director of Clemons Library. "Through the support of Student Council, University and Library administration and staff, the U.Va. Police Department, and through a donation from the University Bookstore, which provided extended escort van service, we are delighted to once again offer this service."
Services and Security
Between the hours of 2a.m. and 8a.m., library visitors have access to study space, databases, computers, and printers. Full circulation and reference services resume at 8:00a.m.
The library is staffed with two overnight monitors between midnight and 8:30a.m. They patrol the building and verify IDs. The U.Va. police periodically patrol the building during late night hours.
The police and Student Council arranged to have an escort van dedicated solely to the library. This van runs from 9p.m. to 5a.m. The van driver calls the Clemons Circulation Desk for library staff to announce its arrival. After 5a.m., students can ride the van that normally runs through Grounds (the 'normal' van runs from 6p.m. to 7a.m.).
Questions concerning Clemons Library hours should be directed to 924-3684.
