February
6, 2002 - University Librarian Karin Wittenborg announces
the appointment of Carol Hunter as director of the
Science
and Engineering Libraries, which include Astronomy,
Biology/Psychology,
Chemistry,
Mathematics,
Physics,
and the Science
and Engineering Library.
Hunter assumes this new assignment after working at
the University Library since 1998 as the assistant
government information librarian.
"We are thrilled that Carol is taking on this
new role," said Diane Walker, associate University
librarian for user services. "During her time
here, Carol has contributed to a number of University
Library initiatives that advance our mission to support
teaching and research programs at the University.
These experiences will be valuable as she leads the
Science and Engineering Libraries."
Hunter's immediate goals are to continue the tradition
and reputation of excellent customer service that
the Science and Engineering Libraries have, as well
as to ensure that they fulfill their role in the Virginia
2020 mission to attain "world-class science and
engineering programs at the University." In the
short term, Hunter will devote much of her energy
to the renovation of Clark
Hall (home of the Science and Engineering Library),
which will provide for more technology and much needed
space for collaborative learning.
"I am delighted to be leading the Science and
Engineering Libraries at this unique time of increased
University emphasis on scientific endeavor,"
said Hunter. "The expansion of Clark Hall coupled
with an outstanding staff committed to providing excellent
service will enable the libraries to more effectively
serve the needs of the science and engineering communities
in this increasingly digital age."
Hunter received her B.A. in 1977 from Rhodes College
in Memphis, Tennessee, and her Masters of Library
Science in 1978 from The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.
Before coming to the University Library, she was assistant
department librarian of archives and manuscripts at
the Birmingham Public Library, Alabama; head of the
New York Region Library of the U.S. Customs Service;
and physical, social science, and engineering librarian
at the Missile and Space Intelligence Center in Huntsville,
Alabama.
