Summary

Click here for the press release about the Library's latest exhibit, an exhibition of maps that Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, and William Clark would have studied in preparation for the journey. The exhibition shows the evolution of how cartographers imagined the American West and is part of the University's Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Project .

Shows California as an island but is also the first map to show all five of the Great Lakes. This image is also the cover of the exhibit catalog.

The map published in official accounts of the trip: shows the Missouri River's connection to the Columbia River basin, thereby extinguishing the idea of a Northwest Passage to the Far East
