EMERGENCY PHONES IN THE LIBRARY
Contact: Diane Walker at (804) 924-4606 or by e-mail: dpw@virginia.edu
In light of safety concerns at the University, the University Library would like to remind students that most libraries are equipped with emergency phones that dial directly to a circulation desk or courtesy phones that students can use to call 911. Cell phones that dial only 911 can be checked out at the circulation desks of Alderman, Clemons and the Science and Engineering Library for use when walking home.
Three red emergency phones are located in the stacks on every floor of Alderman Library. A phone is located across from the elevator in the old and new stacks and one on the back wall of Alderman in the new stacks. When the receiver is picked up, someone at the circulation desk immediately answers. There are free, public phones on floors 2,3 & 4 of Clemons Library. The phones on floors 2 and 3 are located by the elevator and the phone on the fourth floor is located next to the restrooms. In the Science and Engineering Library, a phone dialing directly to the circulation desk or the information desk is located on the Book Floor (bottom floor). Emergency phones are also located in the elevators of Alderman, Clemons, and the Science and Engineering Library and ring directly to the University's Systems Control, part of Facilities Management.
The Library also urges students to report emergencies, safety violation incidents or threatening behavior to a public service desk so that appropriate action can be taken immediately.
