March 9, 2000 - The Law School Library's catalog of nearly 240,000 titles joined VIRGO, the online catalog for the University of Virginia Library, on December 31, 1999.
With the completion of this merger, VIRGO now represents the holdings of Alderman, Astronomy, Biology/Psychology, Chemistry, Clemons, Darden, Education, Fine Arts, Law, Math, Music, Physics, and the Science and Engineering libraries. Researchers can now search for materials in all of these libraries with just one VIRGO search, or limit a search to a particular library, such as Law. "The addition of the Law Library holdings into VIRGO is a major improvement in access to UVA collections. Given the interdisciplinary nature of much current research, it is a significant advantage to be able to search across collections," said Karin Wittenborg, University librarian.
The old Law Library catalog, INNOPAC, will remain online until June 2000 to assist users through the transition to VIRGO, but no updating will be done and information in it will not be current. At present, the Health Sciences Library still retains its own separate catalog that is accessible through a link from the Library web page at http://www.lib.virginia.edu , but it also has plans to merge with VIRGO by the end of the calendar year. Please send questions or comments to virgo.virginia.edu.
