Landmarks of Science is a two-part collection of microform reproductions of the definitive editions of early scientific works. Part I includes early scientific textbooks, rare biographies of scientists, bibliographical collections relative to the history of science and histories of the sciences. Landmarks II (Part II) extends the collection through additional monographic publications as well as early scientific journals. Both parts are international in scope. Items are mainly in English, French, German, Latin and Italian, and some works in other languages are also included.
- Scope
The Library has Landmarks of Science and parts of Landmarks II, containing approximately 17,000 books comprising first editions, and significant later editions, of scientific works world-wide from the beginning of printing to the early 20th century. Collected works of scientists are also included. If available, translations into English (or French or German) of works not originally published in those languages have been added along with the original language editions. Also included are early scientific textbooks, out-of-print rare biographies, bibliographical collections, histories of science, etc. Landmarks II also includes approximately 1,500 scientific journals -- some reproduced on Microprint, some microfilm and some have been reprinted in book format.
- Access and Caveats
Ask at Alderman Library's 3rd floor service desk for assistance locating items in this collection. Full-time staff are available Monday -Friday, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Location: Alderman 3 Old Stacks.
Arrangement: Part I: Items are arranged alphabetically by author or main entry.
Part II: Journals are arranged chronologically from 1666 to the early twentieth century and by title in groups (see list of journals.) Monographs are arranged alphabetically by author or main entry.
Formats: microprint, microfiche, microfilm (and sometimes hard-copy.)
Call numbers: Different call numbers will be assigned to different formats (e.g. Micprnt 9 for the microprints.)
