75TH ANNUAL MEETING
MINUTES
The 75
th annual meeting of the Potomac Technical Processing
Librarians, Regional Affiliate of ALCTS, was held on Friday, October 8,
1999, in the Decker Center, Western Maryland College, Westminister, Maryland.
The theme was “Technical Services Librarians: The Training We Need, the
Issues We Face.”
Approximately 90 attendees registered. A continental breakfast was available
and tours of the Hoover Library were offered.
Marilyn Estes, Chair of PTPL, welcomed everyone and introduced the keynote
speaker and the four panelists.
Marietta Plank, Executive Director, Chesapeake Information and Research
Library Alliance (CIRLA) spoke on the theme, “The Training We Need, The
Issues We Face.” The four panelists focused on issues and training in a
particular area of technical services:

Jean Hirons (CONSER Coordinator, Library of Congress) on training of serials
catalogers;

Lynda Clendenning (Acquisitions and Preservation Department, University
of Virginia Library) on acquisitions issues;

John Walsh (Resources and Collection Management, University Libraries,
George Mason University) on the issue of collection development and its
proper place in the library;
-
Barbara Anderson (Cataloging Services, Virginia Commonwealth University
Libraries) on issues facing catalogers today.
A buffet lunch was served. During lunch, Marilyn Estes conducted the
business meeting.

The minutes of the 74th annual meeting (which had been distributed
at registration) were accepted and approved.

Kathy Miraglia presented the Treasurer’s report, which was accepted and
approved. The balance as of June 8, 1999, was $8,394.49.

Polly Khater, chair of the nominating committee, presented the slate of
candidates for the 1999/2000 term:

Beth Picknally Camden, University of Virginia - Vice Chair/Chair-Elect

Mary Ann Ferrarese, Library of Congress - Secretary ( 2yr term)

Linda Alexander, Gallaudet University - DC Representative (2yr term)

Barbara Conaty, Library of Congress - VA Representative (2yr term)

Marlene Vikor, University of Maryland - MD Representative (2yr term)

As there were no nominations from the floor, the candidates were elected
unanimously.

Marianne Rough, Past Chair, presented a “Historical
Moment” which focused on the ALCTS cpouncil of regional groups. She
also noted that PTPL member Kay Guiles, Library of Congress, had the distinction
of having been a member for the longest period of time. Mr. Guiles could
not be present at the meeting (He was subsequently presented with a PTPL
mug in recognition of his tenure).

Marilyn “passed the gavel” to Heidi Hanson, Chairperson for the 1999/2000
term.
Following the business meeting in the afternoon, five breakout sessions
were led by the speakers:

Acquisitions - Clendenning

Cataloging - Anderson

Collection Development - Walsh
-
Education and Training - Plank
-
Serials - Hirons
After the sessions, the groups re-assembled as a whole and one representative
from each of the sessions recapped the major topics discussed within the
breakout session.
Each speaker was presented with a PTPL mug and the day’s meeting came
to an end.
Attendees filled out evaluation forms prior to departure. Fifty-two
evaluations were collected.
