Digital Sanborn Maps of Charleston

  • The Scholars' Lab provides access to Sanborn Fire Insurance maps for Charleston, provided through Proquest/UMI. These black and white maps are digitized versions of a microfilm collection of Sanborn maps collected at the Library of Congress. The Proquest/UMI collection is restricted to UVa faculty, staff and students.

Other Sources of GIS Data

  • SCDHEC GIS Data Server: provides access to GIS layers developed and maintained by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC). It also provides an inventory of GIS data layers utilized by the agency's GIS users and the layer source.
  • South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Data Clearinghouse: The purpose of this site is to make the SCDNR's GIS data available to users for downloading. Note: this site is still under construction.

  • University of South Carolina GIS Data Server: This data server provides links to geography, services and facilities, physical and environmental, hydrology and related, imagery and infrastructure. But most data for downloading cannot be used if you are outside the campus.
