RHODODENDRONS IN THE NEWS
CECILS GOAL was recently named and registered. The cross was made by Cecil Smith several years ago using one clone of R. yakushimanum X Bow Bells and a special clone of R. hyperythrum with attractive chocolate brown new growth color. This placed genes for foliage color from both plants into the seedlings resulting in excellent foliage characteristics. Ernie Metcalfe from Portland Chapter obtained the seed from the ARS seed exchange and grew on the seedlings, one of which was named and is now growing in the Cecil and Molly Smith Garden. The flower is pink fading to white. It has attractive new growth the color of Bow Bells and the R. hyperythrum. It retains the color and glossy character for a long period of time. A few plants may be available at the Smith Garden plant sales in the spring of 1999.
Mark Weiss, Western Plant Awards Chairman, has submitted three nominations for Conditional Awards from the Seattle Chapter. They are "Mindy's Love", 'Silk Ribbon' and 'Invitation'. They are all Jim Barlup hybrids.
