What's in the Journal American Rhododendron Society
Spring 1999
Sonja Nelson, Editor
The quarterly Journal American Rhododendron Society is a benefit of membership in the American Rhododendron Society. [R&A News Editor: Sonja Nelson, Editor of the Journal American Rhododendron Society, has kindly sent the following general guidelines for the convenience of those who wish to submit articles for Journal American Rhododendron Society. If you wish to submit to that publication, send the material for consideration to Sonja Nelson, Editor<snelson@cnw.com>, at the address listed below. There are separate guidelines for scientific research articles.] RETURN TO TOP OF PAGE
- Two plant hunters enticed by the native azaleas of southeastern United States, George K. McLellan and Clarence Towe, tell of their visits to Providence Canyon, Georgia, home of Rhododendron prunifolium, the plumleaf azalea.
- Norman Todd, the ARS Director of Off-shore Chapters, recounts his visit to Thailand as a guest of the Mai Fah Luang Foundation of Thailand and the rhododendrons he found.
- The Nearing Frame, a rhododendron propagation frame developed by Guy Nearing that respects the need for dormancy, can be modified for easy assembling. Dr. Mark Konrad tells how to build one.
- As a companion plant for rhododendrons, the arbutus tree, Arbutus menziesii, is prized on the West Coast. Author Diane Pertson tells how to propagate it.
- Pioneer rhododendron grower and hybridizer George Fraser of Ucluelet, British Columbia, carried on an extensive correspondence with East Coast hybridizer, Joseph Gable. Author Bill Dale highlights their communications and discusses Fraser's hybrids.
- Peter Kendall presents a photo essay of the historic Garden of the Bishop Close near Portland, Oregon.
- Keshab C. Pradhan recounts Sikkim's twenty-five-year association with the ARS and its ongoing efforts to preserve its native rhododendrons.
- The Danish Chapter celebrates its 25th anniversary as a chapter of the ARS. Bjarne Leth Nielsen and Carl Adam Lehmann give an update on rhododendrons in Denmark.
- The Rhododendron Species Foundation and volunteers have developed a project, the Western North American Rhododendron Species Project, to gather information on native rhododendron species. Author Clarice Clark gives an update on the distribution of Rhododendron macrophyllum with color maps for illustration.
Writers and Photographers Guidelines
for
Journal American Rhododendron Society
Sonja Nelson, Editor
The Journal American Rhododendron Society is published quarterly to further the purposes of the Society, to encourage the culture of rhododendrons, including azaleas, to increase the general understanding of and interest in all aspects of these plants and to add accurately to the knowledge of the genus.
General Policies:
Most of the articles and photographs submitted are by ARS members.
Articles may be of any length appropriate to the subject and may be submitted with or
without photographs or other illustrations.
Photographs are generally submitted and accepted in conjunction with
articles. Articles and photographs are acknowledged upon receipt and should not be
submitted to other publications simultaneously. Those accepted for publication are
scheduled and published according to the editor's discretion. Scientific articles are
subject to technical review and approval before acceptance and publication (separate
guidelines for scientific research articles are available from the editor).
The editor retains the right to edit articles as deemed necessary.
Although care is taken in handling articles and photographs, the Society cannot accept
responsibility for any materials that are damaged or lost. No payment is made for any
articles or photographs.
Mechanical Requirements:
All manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced, on one side of standard
white paper with generous margins (at least 1") all around. Copy from word processors
should not be justified, do not print copy in all capitals, all bold or all italic type.
Send two copies of manuscripts. Computer disks are encouraged, but must be accompanied by
printed copies.
Botanical Nomenclature:
The ARS Journal follows the general guidelines for botanical
nomenclature as stated in The International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. The
rhododendron classification system used is the Edinburgh Revision (RHS Handbook 1998). The
names of botanical families appear in roman and are always capitalized, e.g., Ericaceae.
When referring to the genus, the name is capitalized and underlined or appears in italic:
Rhododendron or Rhododendron. The species name is in lower case, either underlined or in
italic preceded by the genus name or abbreviation: Rhododendron calophytum or R.
calophytum. Hybrid names appear in single quotation marks and may be preceded by the genus
name or abbreviation: 'Taurus', Rhododendron 'Taurus' or R. 'Taurus'. The word,
Rhododendron, must not be abbreviated at the beginning of a sentence, but may be
abbreviated subsequently. Be consistent in your usage. True varieties and subspecies are
written with the abbreviation var. or ssp. in Roman: R. scabrifolium var. scabrifolium.
Selected clones are written with the clonal name in single quotation marks: R.
yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada'. All clonal (and hybrid) names are checked with the Register
of Plant Names for correct spelling and registration. If they are not registered they will
be noted with an asterisk. Common names for plants are written in roman and should appear
in lower case: rhododendrons, azaleas. The word 'rhododendron' is capitalized and
underlined or in italic only when it refers specifically to the genus or is part of a
botanical name.
Color Photographs:
Send a selection of color slides or transparencies. These must be in
sharp focus and bright color. Good color prints are acceptable but second choice to
slides. Label all materials carefully as to subject and photographer's name.
Black & White Photographs:
Sharp prints with good contrast printed on glossy paper are first
choice. Acceptable prints can sometimes be made from color slides, transparencies or color
prints. Label all prints accurately, but do not write on photographs with a sharp
instrument.
Drawings:
Submit good quality pen and ink sketches on white paper. These can be the actual size
intended for publication or larger.
Author's Background:
Accompany your article with a brief biography plus your name, address
and phone number (fax and e-mail if you have them).

Spell Checking: When submitting articles to the Journal or any other publication, dont forget to use your spelling checker. When you have finished, a good proof reading doesnt hurt either. In addition you can copy and paste a spell checklist of rhododendron subgenera, species etc. by clicking on "Spell Checking.". This can be added to your own spell checking custom or special dictionary. (The rhododendron spell checker is courtesy of Dr. Herbert A. Spady, Willamette Chapter ARS.) The complete list of synonyms is available in the Species Dictionary through the Alderman library site.
