Coming back from the funeral of the Dr. Albert R. Mann last February, Jackson Davis remarked, "When my time comes, I hope it will be in the country." It doesn't seem likely that Mr. Davis had a premonition of the approaching end. He was happily making plans for the summer and was looking forward to writing an historical review of education in the South over the last four decades. But if death had to come so soon, certainly, in view of his expressed wish and his deep-rooted affection for his Virginia home, the circumstances of his passing on April 15th could hardly have suited him better.
The previous Friday, after a heavy week of appointments and other business in the New york office, Mr. Davis had taken the train for Richmond to spend a few days at "Chantilly", his thirty-acre estate near Cartersville. He was tired and needed the relaxation, and April in Virginia can be heavenly, but there was another thought that sent him homeward that week-end with the eagerness of a boy. For months he had been trying to buy a power lawn-mower. Everyone in the office knew of his
