The
following is a list of selected resources of potential interest to students and
teachers of French language and literature at the University of Virginia. The
first part provides links to specific Web sites, with a brief description of what
is to be found there. The second part, Guides to Further Resources,
lists inventories intended to direct the user to numerous additional resources.
WEB SITES
- Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication
One of the best first-step introductions to the French online. Includes current events, exhibitions, recent publications, and much more.
- Bibliothèque Nationale de France
The homepage of the national library of France. It includes information about the library, virtual exhibits, and Bn-Opale Plus, the primary online catalog of the library's holdings.
- ABU: la Bibliothèque Universelle
Collection of classic French reading texts. Over thirty full-text works at present, more expected.
- ARTFL Project
University of Chicago and CNRS cooperative project: American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language is a large collection of electronic texts, bibliographies, and databases with links to related sites and additional electronic resources.
- Gallica
A large collection of texts and images from the digital holdings of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Gallica classique is a full-text collection of French literary classics from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
- WESSWeb: French
Studies
The French Studies Web of the West European Specialists Section at the Association of College and Research Libraries gives access to scholarly resources in the area of French Studies. Currently covers France as well as francophone Belgium and Switzerland.
- French Language Resources
The Electronic Text Center's online collection of French texts. Over 30 French literature classics at present.

Générale à la Langue Française
Web Site of the Haut Conseil of the Délégation Générale à la langue française gives the user access to documents relative to the French language, the specific legislative and regulatory texts affecting its use, the France langue subscription list and more.

(AATF)
Professional organization of French teachers in the U.S. encourages the study of the French language and publishes the French Review and National Bulletin.

The homepage of the Modern Language Association of America includes information on MLA publications, the annual convention, and the job information service.

International Bibliography (InfoTrac version)
The standard bibliography for modern languages and literatures. Coverage goes back to 1963. Includes citations to articles in journals and books, and citations to books and dissertations, but no book reviews.

Links to Web sites of the major French newspapers. A few sites contain articles in full text. From the initial index, search under "Médias."
- France Diplomatie
A wealth of information produced by the French Foreign Ministry. Among other things, look for a daily press review under Actualités. Of interest to specialists and nonspecialist Francophiles alike.
- Radio France Internationale
Besides information on RFI programming and the current Francophone music scene, in the "Actualité" section this site includes a review of the French daily and weekly press.

An in-print listing of French books and sound recordings which claims to be comprehensive. The database can be searched by keyword as well as exact author or title, and you can order the titles you want.

With over 900 cities currently online, it is updated daily to provide access to information on travel, entertainment, local business, government and community services around the world. Section on France includes cities, regions, overseas territories and more.

The most scholarly dictionary of the modern French language. Detailed definitions and many examples of usage.

This online dictionary gives brief translations from the Collins paperback dictionaries. French-English and English-French.
