Introduction
[Session: 4 Nov 1999, Alderman Library, 2:00-3:15 pm]
80-90% of all that you need for the papers are available through the "Sources for Second Section." Use that for almost all things. This is just a supplement to that, to show some Library sources.
Most information today is still only available in print. More and more is coming out online, but not yet.
Two types of online information, but mainly cover only the last 10 years:
- Indexes - of books and articles
- Full-text - some.
Basic facts or information - Encyclopedia and Facts on File
General News - full text from Lexis/Nexis, and from Ethnic NewsWatch, and some in InfoTrack.
Indexes
- for books - our online catalog (VIRGO), WorldCat
- for articles in specialized indexes - Anthropological Literature, Contemporary Women's Issues, and Bibliography of Native North Americans.
Search Tips - Try it! Learn! Try it again! Don't give up!
That is, try any search, using a term or word which is close to what you want. Then, learn what are the ways and words which that particular database uses. See what is the symbol for truncation. See what words they use, by looking at a specific record, clicking on any underlined links, etc. Then, try it again, and again, using what you've learned. Don't give up.
And ask at the Alderman desk.Search VIRGO, AnthLit, Bibli of NA, InfoTrac, Lexis/Nexis, ContWo, EthNewsW
