Back to the top II. Other Virgo databases

    A. ATLA Religion Database (Religion Index) [Instructor searches alone]

      1. "Other Databases - Journal articles". First Click on "Accessing Databases from Off-Grounds" link. Note two choices, Proxy account or UVa anywhere. [Dail-up accesss has been terminated].

      2. "Go back." Click on "A" for ATLA Religion Database. General Description: indexes journal articles, articles in books, book reviews, books, dissertations. Some links to the full text of journal articles, including some titles for which we have no paper subscription. Coverage back to 1949.

      3. Basic Search window opens, set to Standard Search. Find: priesthood and feminis*. "And" must be inserted between terms in Standard Search. * is truncation symbol. 37 records. Note two types of full text links: "Linked full text (no. 1) and "Full text from ATLA" (nos. 9, 14, 19). The two types have a different look. View no. 2 ("Praxis vs image"). Note that subject headings are hot links.

      4. Changing display format. Click on "Preferences" at upper right. Change "Format" to "Detailed", and "Apply." Now click on "Result list." You can now see subejct headings and abstrcts in the search result list.

      5. Saving reults -- multiple citations. For nos. 1, 2, and 11 click on "add" in the right column to add citations to the folder. Click on "View folder" at upper right. Choices are "print," "e-mail," and "save to disk." Choose "e-mail." Keep "empty folder" and "additional citation details" checked. You would next type in your e-mail address, give the message a subject, and send. Despite the "HTML Full Text" box, only citations can be e-mailed, not full text.

      6. Search limits. Click on "new search." in box under "limit your results," check "full text," then search birth control and religion. In standard searc, terms side by side are searched as phrases. 7 hits.

      7. [When printing an ATLA full-text article, first note the page range of the article, then click on full-text link. "Print". Change to full page range under 1); full page range is not automatically inserted. "Redisplay". Although pages to be printed display in smaller form in column to the left, when you click on the browser print button, text prints full size.]

      8. Index search. Use "new search" to return to Basic Search screen. Click on "Names as Subjects" on green bar at top. Search "Dogen" in the index, clicking on "Browse." Check both forms of the name and click on "Search". 83 hits. To limit this search, click on "Refine Search" tab. Under "Limit your results", check "Full text," then click on "Search" by the Find box. 23 hits. [Scriptures example: John 3:16 -- no space between chapter and verse]

      9. "Check Virgo for UVA availability" link is only a quick way to search Virgo, not a guarantee that the library has the title.

      10. [Advanced Search allows you to set search limiters in several ways (type of publication, date of publication, language, etc.) and see your search history. You can also find the field codes listed there.].

    B. No logout available from ATLA. From window open to Virgo or by going to Library home page and clicking on Databases, show other relevant databases. In alphabetical list, mention 1) Digital Dissertations, 2) Historical Abstracts [coverage only since 1450], 3) Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe, 4) MLA Bibliography, 5) Philosopher's Index, 6) WorldCat (verification for ILL). Often there are two versions, "Web" and "Virgo". Web allows for more sophisticated searching, but Virgo has a familiar interface and links to interlibrary loan.
