Back to the top II. Other Virgo databases

    A. ATLA Religion Database (Religion Index) [Instructor searches alone]

      1. "Other Databases - Journal articles". First Click on "Accessing Databases from Off-Grounds" link. Note two choices, Proxy account or UVa anywhere.

      2. Click on other open (VIRGO) window. Click on "A" for ATLA Religion Database. General Description: indexes journal articles, articles in books, book reviews, books, dissertations. Some links to the full text of journal articles, including some titles for which we have no paper subscription. Coverage back to 1949.

      3. Basic Search window opens. Find: priesthood and women. "And" must be inserted between terms in Standard Search. 102 records. Note two types of full text links: "Linked full text" (no. 4) and "Full text from ATLA" (no. 2). The two types have a different look. For journal articles only, if there is no link to full text, click on "Find Article @ UVA libraries." If no electronic versons are found, click on "Virgo Library Cagalog" under "Print Versions" to see if the Library owns the needed issue in print format. Example: Click on "Find Article" under no. 1 (Gender and the Image of Christ). Vol. 84 no. 3 (2002) is a bound journal in Alderman stacks.

      4. Open Ebsco Host window. View full record of no. 7 (Praxis versus image), by clicking on article title. Note that subject headings are hot links.

      5. Changing display format. Click on "Preferences" at upper right. Change "Format" to "Detailed", and "Apply." Now click on "Result list." You can now see subejct headings and sometimes abstrcts in the search result list.

      6. Saving reults -- multiple citations. For nos. 1, 4, and 5 click on "add" in the right column to add citations to the folder. Click on "View folder" at upper right. Choices are "print," "e-mail," and "save to disk." Choose "e-mail." [Keep "remove these items from folder" checked. You would next type in your e-mail address, give the message a subject, and send. Despite the "HTML Full Text" box, only citations can be e-mailed, not full text.]

      7. Search limits. Click on "new search." in box under "limit your results," check "full text," then search birth control and religion*. In bacic search, terms side by side are searched as phrases. * is the truncation symbol. 9 hits.

      8. [When printing an ATLA full-text article, first note the page range of the article, then click on full-text link. "Print". Type in the full range of pages under 1); full page range is not automatically inserted. "Redisplay". Although pages to be printed display in smaller form in column to the left, when you click on the browser print button, text prints full size.]

      9. Scripture search. Use "new search" to return to Basic Search screen. Click on "Scriptures" on green bar at top. Note this is limited to Judaeo-Christian scriputres. Type in John 3:16 (no space between chapter and verse). "Browse." Check the four boxes begging with this vers, and "Search." 31 hits.

      10. ["Check Virgo for UVA availability" link is only a quick way to search Virgo, not a guarantee that the library has the title.]

      11. [Advanced Search allows you to set search limiters in several ways (type of publication, date of publication, language, etc.) and see your search history. You can also find the field codes listed there.].

    B. No logout available from ATLA. Click on "University of Virginia Library" window, then "Go to Databases." In alphabetical list, mention 1) American Hisotry and Life, 2) Digital Dissertations, 3) Historical Abstracts [all the world but North America since 1450], 4) Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe, 5) MLA Bibliography, 6) Philosopher's Index, 7) WorldCat (verification for ILL). Often there are two versions, "Web" and "Virgo". Web allows for more sophisticated searching, but Virgo has a familiar interface and links to interlibrary loan.
